About Making Skills

About Making Skills

Learning differently doesn't mean aiming lower.

At Making Skills, we believe every learner deserves the opportunity to achieve recognised qualifications in a way that works for them.

We specialise in delivering engaging, practical learning for young people who may not thrive in traditional education. Whether your learner is home educated, unable to attend mainstream school, rebuilding confidence, managing additional needs, or simply learns best through hands-on experiences, our courses provide a flexible and supportive pathway to success.

Our mission is to develop confidence, independence and essential life skills while helping learners achieve nationally recognised qualifications from the comfort of their own home.

Why Choose Making Skills?

Unlike many online courses, learners aren't left to work through pre-recorded videos on their own.

Our courses combine live teaching, practical cooking, personalised feedback and flexible study so every learner receives genuine support throughout the year.

Every learner benefits from:

✅ Weekly live online lessons

✅ Recorded lessons available afterwards

✅ Practical cooking every week

✅ Choice of recipes to suit confidence and dietary needs

✅ Step-by-step demonstrations

✅ Downloadable learning resources

✅ Personal tutor feedback

✅ Flexible learning around family life

✅ A nationally recognised Pearson qualification

Our aim is to remove barriers to learning while maintaining high standards, clear expectations and an enjoyable learning experience.

Pearson Level 2 BTEC Home Cooking Skills

Our flagship course is the Pearson Level 2 BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualification.

Throughout the academic year learners develop practical cooking skills alongside valuable knowledge about nutrition, food safety and independent living.

Topics include:

• Kitchen safety and food hygiene

• Knife skills and practical cooking techniques

• Healthy eating and nutrition

• Meal planning and budgeting

• Reducing food waste

• Cooking for different dietary requirements

• Food preparation and presentation

• Building confidence and independence in the kitchen

Each week learners prepare a variety of delicious recipes while steadily developing the skills needed to cook safely and independently.

How the Course Works

We've created a simple weekly routine that combines structure with flexibility.

Monday

Your new week's learning becomes available.

Learners receive:

• Lesson notes

• Recipe choices

• Shopping list

• Worksheets

• Preparation guidance

Tuesday

Join the live online lesson.

Learners can ask questions, watch demonstrations, take part in discussions and receive support from their tutor.

Wednesday

The lesson recording is uploaded.

If you couldn't attend live, don't worry—you can watch the lesson whenever it suits you.

Throughout the Week

Complete your practical cooking.

Upload photographs and coursework.

Receive personalised tutor feedback before moving on to the next week's lesson.

This flexible structure allows learners to study at a pace that fits around family life while still benefiting from regular tutor support.

Assessment

Assessment is designed to be supportive rather than stressful.

Learners gradually build coursework evidence throughout the year as they complete practical cooking tasks and written activities.

The final practical assessment can be completed from home while being observed by a qualified assessor via secure video call.

There is no requirement to travel for weekly classes, making the qualification accessible to learners across the UK.

Following successful completion and Pearson moderation, certificates are issued during the summer and posted directly to learners.

Who Is This Course Suitable For?

Making Skills has been designed for learners who benefit from a more flexible approach to education, including those who:

• Are home educated

• Are unable to attend mainstream school

• Have anxiety or low confidence

• Have additional learning needs

• Enjoy practical, hands-on learning

• Learn best in a calm environment

• Want to develop valuable life skills

About the Tutor

Making Skills was founded by a fully qualified teacher with extensive experience teaching Food Technology, Design & Technology and practical subjects across primary, secondary and alternative education settings.

Having worked with learners from a wide range of educational backgrounds—including home educated learners, those with SEND, SEMH needs and students accessing alternative provision—we understand that every learner is different.

Our teaching focuses on encouragement, patience and practical success, helping learners achieve recognised qualifications while developing confidence that extends far beyond the kitchen.

By the end of the course learners will have developed:

⭐ Confidence

⭐ Independence

⭐ Organisation

⭐ Problem-solving skills

⭐ Healthy cooking habits

⭐ Greater resilience and self-belief

These are skills they'll continue to use long after receiving their qualification.
